What we do best, a long easy workout or a hard fast?

I have a total gym used a couple of days ago, and have the DVD. So what I'm doing is putting in a movie and lightly work the same, I wondered if that's good, or should be limited to resolve by 20 minutes and go as hard and fast? What is the best method that works for you? Oh, and I'm going to the muscles, not weight loss. Thank you.
